How We Review
We test tools before we write about them
Most “best tools” lists online are written by rewording a product's own marketing page. We do it differently: before anything gets published on SubstiTool, we actually use the tool ourselves.
Here's what that looks like in practice.
Our review process
1. We sign up and go through onboarding
We experience the tool the way a new user would, starting from account creation, not a demo environment or a sales call. If onboarding is confusing or takes forever, we note that. If it's smooth, we note that too.
2. We test the core features
We use the features the tool is actually built for, not just the ones that look good in a screenshot. We're looking for what works reliably, what feels half-finished, and what's missing entirely compared to what's promised.
3. We compare it against alternatives
Nothing exists in a vacuum. When we review a tool, we look at how it stacks up against the other tools people typically consider for the same job, so our comparisons reflect real trade-offs, not just a single tool in isolation.
4. We check pricing and value
We look at what you actually get at each pricing tier, not just the headline price, and flag anything that feels misleading, like features locked behind unexpectedly higher plans.
5. We write up what we found
Our write-ups reflect our own experience: what a tool does well, where it falls short, and who it's actually a good fit for. We're not trying to make every tool sound perfect.
What we look at
Across every review, we consistently evaluate:
- Ease of setup: How fast you can get from signup to actually using the tool
- Core functionality: Does it do what it claims, and does it do it well
- Design and usability: Is it intuitive, or does it fight you
- Pricing and value: What you're actually getting for what you pay
- Limitations: What's missing, clunky, or worth knowing before you commit
Sponsored Listings
Some tools on SubstiTool are Sponsored Listings, meaning the tool provider has paid for placement, such as a featured spot or highlighted position. These listings are always clearly labeled as “Sponsored Listing” so you can tell them apart from our independently researched picks.
Paying for a Sponsored Listing does not exempt a tool from our testing process, and it does not buy a better rating, review content, or ranking. We still test these tools the same way we test everything else.

This helps keep SubstiTool running, but it doesn't change which tools we choose to review or how we rate them. Our opinions are based on our own testing, not on which links pay the most.
We keep listings up to date
Software changes fast. Features get added, pricing shifts, companies pivot. When we notice a tool has changed significantly since our last review, we go back and retest it so the information on SubstiTool stays accurate rather than frozen at the moment we first wrote it.
